When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he says:
“Look, the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
John 1 verse 29
And Paul writes:
…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10 verse 9
and
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy…
Titus 3 verse 4 – 5
Jesus is the one who took away the sins of the world. There is no mention of human ritual or saving ourselves through our own acts or good deeds.
Sure, Jesus teaches us how to act, live and love, and some of that involves loving others and loving God. But our salvation is not dependent on our actions. It is entirely dependent on what he has done on our behalf.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2 verse 8 – 9
Paul puts it as simply as he can. We are saved by grace, through faith in Jesus, not by our own works, so stop trying to make out that it is because of our actions.
Our salvation is God’s doing. It is a free gift given by him. We cannot earn it by doing good deeds or by partaking in the sacraments, going to church, saying prayers, or by going to confession.
