It is important to note that there is nothing in the Bible to suggest that followers of Jesus need to be ‘confirmed’.  The idea was devised and established at the Council of Trent in 1563.

Confirmation is seen as the completion of baptism where a believer receives the Holy Spirit and a Bishop ‘confirms’ it and incorporates them into the Roman Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church argues that confirmation comes from Acts 19 where Paul met some disciples in Corinth. – Although we will see that this justification is flawed.

And he (Paul) said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptised?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptised with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.”

Acts 19 verse 2 – 6

This was a very specific situation where these disciples had received a version of baptism that John the Baptist was teaching before Jesus. But it has no place in society today as since the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit resides in all who repent and believe in Jesus.

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1 verse 13 – 14

Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

Galatians 3 verse 2

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?

1 Corinthians 6 verse 19

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

Romans 8 verse 9

Upon believing the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus, we receive the Holy Spirit. We do not need a bishop to confirm this for it to take place. We receive the Holy Spirit from the moment we believe.
